For the second time in one month, Paris Hilton’s name has been attached to incidents of pot possession. Both times Hilton claims it was a misunderstanding, yet the association is overriding her defenses.
Only July 2nd, Hilton was arrested for allegedly smoking pot at a World Cup game in South Africa. The charges were later dropped, citing “wrongfully accused” and she took to her Twitter to state: “Everything is fine guys. I had nothing to do with it.” Yet her friend, former Playboy Playmate Jennifer Rovero, was charged with possession and had to pay a $128 fine.
Now this weekend when Hilton was allegedly detained on the French island of Corsica after airport authorities found pot in her purse, she tweeted: “So sick of people making up rumors about me. The latest one about me is completely false too. Don’t believe what you read. Silly nonsense.”
Now while Hilton might appear to be a typical blonde, I don’t think she’s ditzy enough to try to get past airport security with marijuana in her bag; as lax as some airport security can be. Yet rather than further clarify why she was stopped, she’s just brushing it off and letting this rumor sit on top of the World Cup rumor.
The thing about rumors in the Hollywood circuit is that the more you hear them, the more you believe them to be true. This was strike two for Paris without her combating it with the truth to overpower the lie. If she has another incident, people are going to assume she was covering herself up the entire time.
And in the age of Twitter, a 140 character explanation that she had a lighter in her bag would have been a lot better PR.
