Please Say You Love Me Back

This week’s Wednesday’s Writer Wins is being replaced by an open love letter to Glee; mainly Brad Falchuk, who needs to be praised and bowed down to for last night’s episode, “Sexy.”

On American TV, writers tend to play it safe. I think their thought process is: be conservative to woo the most viewers, have heterosexual relationships, a few minorities, and maybe a vampire and call “action!” Well, Glee has yet again said, “screw that!” Many fans have wanted the Brittana storyline explored since Season One when Brittany let it slip that they have sex. “Duets” this season was fanservice- giving the fans something memorable and then move on. But no one moved on; we all became like rabid dogs because all the love and feelings were evident. Artie was a ploy to get Santana jealous that turned into an utterly annoying relationship. Artie dumbs Brittany down, doesn’t truly care about her, and they have absolutely no chemistry together. It’s the most ridiculous relationship on TV. I think Xander and the praying mantis teacher on Buffy were a better couple than Bartie! Artie needs to go and I’m hoping last night was Step One.

When Naya Rivera tweeted “There’s been a Brittana fan uproar… Don’t worry, I miss it too” the day after the Glee Christmas episode aired, she truly became the Captain and won fan hearts even more. When Brad famously tweeted, “Brittana is on. Brittana was always on. Episode 15 — and Gwyneth is the one who gets them together…” on January 20, we all foamed at the mouth saying “holy sweet hell!” But this is Glee, where storylines can be abandoned quicker than we all forgot Quinn had a baby. What happened last night truly surpassed everyone’s expectations. Even if it left me in tears, yelling, “No Brittany! How could you!” and actually hating the blonde for the first time, I applaud Glee with every ounce of my being.

The exploration of feelings, denial, and sexuality was so real and beautiful and sadly isn’t something that TV shows place enough emphasis on. To see the HBIC (Head Bitch In Charge) strongest female character on the show cry during “Landslide” and pour her heart out at The Hurt Locker, as Tumblr fans are calling it, wasn’t just “Must See TV,” it was real life for a lot of people.

“What I’ve realized, is why I’m such a bitch all the time. I’m a bitch because I’m angry. I’m angry because I have all of these feelings. Feelings for you, that I’m afraid of dealing with because I’m afraid of dealing with the consequences. I wanna be with you, but I’m afraid of the talks and the looks.I’m so afraid of what everyone will say behind my back, still I have to accept, that I love you. I love you and I don’t want to be with Sam or Finn, or any of those other guys. I just want you. Please say you love me back, please”.

That speech is single-handedly the most powerful dialogue in the show’s history; possibly on any show I’ve ever seen in my life. I will never forget “Sexy” or ever stop being grateful for Brad and the incredible duo of Naya and Heather. BUT (there’s always a but with Glee) if Brittany doesn’t wake the hell up and dump that “stupid boy” ASAP, preferably next week, I will be distraught and paralyzed with fear that Santana will just put her walls back up and Brittana will be so much harder to make happen. After all, Brittany is the one who pushed Santana to open up and discuss her feelings and then she shuts her down so coldy. Brittany can’t love Artie that much if she’s been cheating on him with Santana all along! The writers can’t have Brittany be this stupid. It’s bad enough she thought she was having a stork baby; let her at least make the right decision here. Brittany needs to roll Artie off a cliff and start singing “One and Only” by Adele to make this better.

Until the soulmates are reunited, I’ll just continue listening to Landslide, getting choked up, and being so grateful that Brad, Naya, and Heather exist and brought this to life. It’s on. It was always on.

No Naya, we love YOU.
